Ashton Kutcher as Jack and Cameron Diaz as Joy, a couple unhappily married after a fateful drunken night in “What Happens in Vegas.”
|
"What Happens in Vegas" exceeds any expectations of being just
another predictable romantic comedy with A-list celebrities. This
movie doesn't ride on Ashton Kutcher's good looks alone, but it
provides lots of laughs and funny one-liners between Cameron Diaz
and Kutcher's characters.
When Joy McNally (Diaz) gets dumped by her fiance, her best
friend convinces her that Las Vegas is just what she needs. Around
the same time, Jack Fuller (Kutcher) gets fired from his job, so he
and his best friend also head for Las Vegas. After an awkward
bathroom confrontation, the four of them discover that they have
been booked in the same room, leading to a night of drunken
debauchery that results in Joy and Jack swapping vows in a ceremony
they don't remember the next morning.
The next day, after verbally assaulting one another, Jack drops
a coin belonging to Joy in a slot machine she is playing and wins
$3 million. Joy insists that she get half of the money because they
are married. The two of them take their dispute to court, and the
judge rules that they must live together for six months and attend
couples therapy in order to prove that they have made a substantial
effort as husband and wife, and then he will grant their divorce
and divide their money in half.
While Jack is a sloppy bachelor who sits at home and plays Wii,
Joy is an uptight workaholic who isn't happy with her job. The two
of them learn from one another while they are forced into
cohabitation and discover what they really want out of life and
relationships.
The plot is somewhat predictable and very unrealistic, but as
with most romantic comedies, the exaggerated storyline doesn't sink
in until after the credits roll. However, the comedic scenes are
what redeem it.
One stands out in particular: Joy is taking her time getting
ready in the bathroom, and Jack can't wait any longer, so he
resorts to peeing in the sink full of dishes, yelling over his
shoulder that it's her night to wash dishes.
While the relationship between Jack and Joy seems a bit
implausible at times, the sexual tension and genuine annoyance they
show for one another is entertaining and realistic, making their
relationship easier for viewers to relate to.
Diaz and Kutcher's characters are ones viewers have met before
in other romantic comedies (think "The Break-Up" or "Just
Married"): the attractive, successful girl who somehow ends up
living with, marrying, or sleeping with the
too-good-looking-for-his-own-good slacker, who miraculously turns
out to be a sweet and charming guy by the end of the film.
It's easy for the audience to see why Joy could fall for Jack
after she discovers that he's a Little League coach and a loving
uncle, but it's never very clear as to how Jack could fall for Joy,
who doesn't show much character development besides becoming more
fun when she's drunk.
Overall, the film is funnier than expected for a romantic
comedy, though it has more gross humor than corny romantic moments.
If you don't mind sitting through romantic comedies, or if you like
them, then "What Happens in Vegas" is definitely worth
watching.
