Best friends Tom (Patrick Dempsey) and Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) in “Made of Honor,” a chick-flick with a few unique qualities.
|
There should be a checklist for successful chick-flicks. Hunky
lead? Check. Best friend/secret love-interest? Check. Ridiculous
story line that would never happen to a normal person? Check,
check, and check. "Made of Honor" not only employs every "check" on
the list, making it a traditional, swooning flick, but adds a few
quirky notions of its own, giving it a unique quality.
After accidentally climbing into the wrong bed one drunken night
in college, Tom (Patrick Dempsey) became best friends with Hannah
(Michelle Monaghan), and they have been so for the past 10 years of
their lives. Tom's relationship with Hannah is the only functional
female friendship he possesses, as she is the one woman who hasn't
been swept away by his charisma and good looks. All his other
relationships with women are purely sexual.
When Hannah goes to Scotland on a business trip, he realizes,
too late, that the only woman he wants in his life is her. Upon her
arrival, she comes back with the seemingly perfect Scottish duke
Colin McMurray (Kevin McKidd) and an engagement ring.
She then asks Tom to be her maid of honor and take on all the
duties that position entails. He takes the task on with only one
goal in mind: steal the bride.
The predictability of the movie is like clockwork, but the
miniature quirks about it are what make it charming. Some
highlights include Tom's attempts to put together bridal shower
baskets and his friends' masculine version of female bonding. He
and his guy friends replace poker night by creating baskets of
candles with the scent of "Tahitian Sunrise" and robin's eggs.
Since most chick-flicks generally come from a female
perspective, the male version is all the more endearing. While
women get together to consume their body weight in chocolate and
create a detailed plan of attack, the men plot to steal the bride
the only way they can think of: destroy from the inside and create
a basketball cheer to "steal the bride."
Dempsey reveals his diversity as Tom by playing him differently
than his well-known roles as McDreamy on "Grey's Anatomy" and
Robert in "Enchanted." Instead of the "perfect catch" on "Grey's"
and the responsible, pessimistic Robert, Dempsey is a chauvinistic,
honest-to-a-fault man who spends all his life sleeping around
instead of investing time in an actual relationship. Credit to
Dempsey lies in his ability to take a flawed man and make him
appeal to the female population.
Monaghan comes to life as the stereotypical "best friend." Her
subtle acting and her charming banter with Dempsey are enjoyable,
and the chemistry between the pair is just right. They are
believable as lifelong friends but still maintain the necessary
sexual tension.
Sure, it follows every trend of chick-flicks preceding it and
doesn't require much intellectual thought. But that is a rule of
the genre: make sure that there are two distinguishable characters
that need to be together, throw some obstacles in their way, add an
expendable love interest that you either kill off or send away, and
make sure there is always a happy ending. And "Made of Honor"
covers it all.
