A co-ed team of middle school students crushed the SPU men's
basketball team on Nov. 18, but none of the players were too
concerned with the loss. As part of a fundraiser to benefit
pediatric tumor research, six members of the varsity squad took to
wheelchairs to challenge some young hoopsters who were
wheelchair-bound themselves.
Junior basketball player Casey Reed and senior classmates Justin
Abel, Ryan Jewell and Lindsey Johnson organized the basketball
workshop for 9- to 14-year-olds. As a project for an upper level
business class, the four students teamed with Children's Hospital
and the Seattle SuperSonics to raise almost $2,000.
Ex-Sonics player Slick Watts helped facilitate the time, which
included the wheelchair exhibition game and plenty of fun drills.
About 45 youths attended the workshop.
