It has been four years since it last happened. The Falcons were ready this time, and when the opportunity came, they took it and ran with it. Friday night Sacramento State (8-8) walked into Royal Brougham looking for a victory but what they left with was the taste of defeat.

Last season Sacramento State handed the SPUGs their only home loss, but this year history would not repeat itself. The Falcon (3-12) gymnasts tumbled their way to their first home win of the season, Friday, while scoring a season high mark of 192.375.

"It was really good that we scored above 192 ... the high score helps with our average," freshman Christie Chinaka said. Chinaka competed on the uneven bars and the balance beam during the Sacramento State meet.

The Falcons were in top form as they faced the Hornets at home. Seattle Pacific started the night off right, sweeping the vault. Senior Kari Kelly took first and tied her season high score with a mark of 9.8. Kelly is currently ranked second in the nation on the vault.

Sophomores Sarah Sullivan and Kristin Bryant completed the sweep, taking second (9.700) and third (9.625) respectively.

The Falcons also took care of business on the uneven bars with Sullivan placing second (9.700) and freshman Ashley Domres taking third with 9.650.

As SPU went into their final rotation they found themselves trailing the Hornets by .55 points. But the next event was a Falcon specialty... the floor exercise. And SPU lived up to all expectations.

Sophomore Debra Huss took first place on the floor with 9.825. Teammate Corrie McDaniel, a senior, tied for second with Sacramento gymnast Stefanie Aeder (9.775). The floor was SPU's top event for the night with a combined score of 48.600 points for the Falcons.

In all-around competition the Falcons were again on top. Huss was all-around winner, scoring 38.275 points, and close at her heels in third place was Sullivan with 38.100 points.

The meet saw a few new faces in the line-up including freshman Priscilla Morgan on the vault. "It is good to see the No. 7 girls coming in and doing their job," Kingley said.

Chinaka agreed, adding that the girls who are coming into the line-up are doing well and hitting their events,"

"This meet was a confidence builder ... it was great to beat a team that we will be seeing at conference," said senior Elisabeth Kingsley.

But their win over Sac State is not all the Falcons have to look to for a confidence boost. With only two regular seasons meets left to go, the Falcons are ranked second in the nation and have several of their gymnasts ranked nationally in individual events.

As they close off their season, the Falcons refuse to slow down. "We are trying to keep getting better with every meet," said Chinaka.

As the focus for their upcoming multi-university meet at Boise State, Kingsley says that the Falcons are working on their confidence level.

One immediate goal the Falcons hope to see met at the Boise meet is to go "24 for 24." "Basically, we are trying to get everyone to hit on every event," added Chinaka.

The Falcons are still eagerly awaiting the return of junior Jaynie Reynolds who was injured a few weeks ago in the home meet against OSU. "Hopefully she will be doing the uneven bars this weekend ... but we want to be patient with it," Kingsley said.

Chinaka summed up the goal of the Falcons as they close out the season, saying, "We are trying to focus on how we do and making sure we do our job and score as high as possible."
