Instilling compassion in youth
In another life, Tenzin Gyatso and Desmond Tutu could be
brothers. The old men, both recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize,
teased and laughed with each other, seemingly oblivious of the
thousands of eyes watching them.

Fascination leads to environmental activism
Robert Swan’s fascination with Antarctica began at the age of
11, when he saw a film about traveling to Antarctica. Shortly after
attending university, despite his young age, he managed to raise
the millions of dollars needed to take a small team on the
expedition from 1985 to 1987.

Rock for DMD show raises $23,000
If there is one lesson that Conrad Reynoldson has learned from
organizing a benefit concert for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)
research, it has been that a person cannot half-heartedly strive to
accomplish something big. Rather, it takes 100 percent of a
person’s effort.

Mariners-Red Sox tickets funded
Senate voted unanimously to purchase 125 Mariners tickets for an
up-front cost of $1,375 on Monday night. The money will come from
the general fund. Since student tickets will be subsidized, the
expected revenue for the event is $1,055.

Tracking e-waste’s final destination
Six city, county and state representatives met with SPU alumnus
and adjunct faculty member Jason Purcell on Monday to talk about
his electronic waste collection drive, which happened during spring
break.

Calling for the church to unite as one
The Christian church today is a mirror of the divisions within
the tribes of Israel, said Frank Spina, professor of Old Testament.
Both the Jewish and Christian churches are comprised of many sects
and traditions, diversities that equate to division, he said.

Thanking prayerful neighbors
Bonnie Brann remembers being a child and her father taking
frequent trips to Seattle, where he served as an SPU trustee for 31
years. Brann eventually followed her father and made SPU her home
as a student.
