Women’s soccer wins last home game

Three seniors honored before Saturday’s game

For the first time in two seasons, senior midfielder Kendall Thoreson appeared on the field, even though it was for only a few seconds.

The referees and opposing Western Oregon agreed to kick the ball out of bounds seconds into the game and Thoreson, who has been sidelined with injuries, was subbed out with loud applause.

“She has put herself through a tremendous amount,” head coach Chuck Sekyra said. “But she is getting better.”

Thoreson, along with forward Megan Lindsay and midfielder Brittany Langdon, were all honored at Saturday’s “Senior Day” game against the Western Oregon Wolves.

The seniors’ parents and siblings greeted them out on the field with bouquets prior to the game.

The three were celebrated by their team and their coaches.

The half ended at a 0-0 standstill. 19 minutes into the second half, Lindsay took a shot on goal and scored on the rebound.

Lindsay couldn’t stay out of the goal box; 14 minutes later, after a pass from sophomore forward Ali Martin, she scored again.

She topped off her seasonal goals to 10 and led her team to a 2-0 victory.

On Thursday, Lindsay scored two goals in the 4-2 victory over St. Martin’s.

Lindsay is a four-year letterwinner and a two time All-American.

She is ranked as one of the top three scorers to ever play for SPU. She currently has 39 career goals under her belt and 21 assists.

“Over four years, [Lindsay] has constantly put this team on her back,” Sekyra said. “She’s been a marked player for a reason.”

Lindsay is a foods and nutrition major who hopes to be a nurse someday. She toys with the idea of possibly traveling to Europe and playing soccer overseas. For now, she is focused on leading her team into the postseason.

“I want to go all the way up to the championships,” Lindsay said. “I’ll do everything I can to take us there. Our whole team is the same way; we want to go past our season.”

But Lindsay isn’t the only senior with big plans for her team.

“I hope we can get into first or second to host the NCAA tournament,” Thoreson said. “[I’d like to] get a ring on my finger.”

Thoreson is a communication major who aims at becoming a sports broadcaster.

She made eight assists during her time at SPU and was the 2010 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Newcomer of the year.

“I’ll miss having a team that’s always there for you,” Thoreson said. “I’ll miss the aspect of having a team. They’re kind of like my sisters.”

Langdon is also a communication major with a minor in psychology.

“I want to go into international adoptions or start my own non-profit,” Langdon said.

Langdon has scored two game-winning goals and has made nine goals for the Falcons.

Saturday was her 70th career game for SPU.

“Brittany has as big a heart as anyone who has ever played in our program,” Sekyra said. “I seriously wish everyone with a naked eye could see what she’s done for our program. She’s always put our team first. She’s irreplaceable.”

All three seniors are looking forward to their season going as long as it possibly can and vying for a chance to host the NCAA tournament at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons’ next game will be against Simon Fraser in Burnaby, B.C. on Thursday. The Falcons have a current record of 12-2-2 and are ranked third in the west region.

With two conference games left, the pressure is on for the team to step onto the road the upperclassmen have paved.

Sekyra is anticipating great things from his team and is proud of the three seniors.

“Their legacy will have an impact,” he said.
