SPU sees record enrollment

With a record number of freshmen attending Seattle Pacific this year, the university is looking for new ways to house the school’s growing population, a university official said.

A total of 784 freshmen are attending SPU this year—an increase of 24 students from last year, said Ruth Adams, university registrar.

SPU’s total enrollment is 4,095 students with 3,238 undergraduate, 828 graduate, and 29 post-baccalaureate students, according to school’s website.

This freshman class is also the school’s most ethnically diverse class with 34 percent of new students identifying themselves as ethnically diverse, said Susan Lane, director of multi-cultural programs, in an email.

In 1998, SPU drafted a 21st century enrollment plan that set student-population goals through 2013.

According to the plan, the school hoped to have 3,500 undergraduate and 1,500 graduate students for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Sixty-one new beds were added to the four dorm halls on campus to accommodate the 737 freshmen living on campus, said Elonna Visser, associate director of housing.

Irondale, a proposed 150-bed dorm hall across the street from Hill Hall, has been put on hold because of other more pressing university projects, Visser said.

Another timeline for construction on Irondale may be set in the future, Visser said.

Irondale would take about 15 months to build, said Don Mortenson, in an interview with The Falcon last spring.

Mortenson said the university does not want to out-build demand.
