The Falcon is for students and by students

Hello! I’d like to introduce you to The Falcon, Seattle Pacific University’s only student newspaper.

I’m writing this on behalf of the paper’s entire editorial staff for this school year. I’m the Editor-in-Chief, and the rest of ‘em are in charge of either their own sections, layout, copy, the website or bidness.

We wrote a new mission statement this year, and we mean every word of it. It’s just to the left of this column. That’s what we’re trying to do this year.

The Falcon is fundamentally different from many other things made out of paper you’ll see on campus. ETC and Response are both produced by SPU, and the former of the two especially is meant to make our school look great. The Falcon’s role is to be as accurate and truthful as possible, and serve the campus community with the best news and commentary we can come up with. The good and bad of SPU will be in the paper, as they should be.

Our real audience is students - not faculty, staff or administration. That’s who our content is chosen for and aimed at – though we’d like to be a solid news source for faculty and staff as well.

We want to be as responsive as possible to your concerns and ideas and stuff. We welcome letters to the editor, guest columns and story tips from the SPU community.

You can also write or take photos for us. It’s not even too late yet to sign up for fall quarter! It’s a good experience.

There’s a lot that people don’t know about the paper., so I’d also like to answer some FAQ’s.

We’ve been around since 1929. Bet you wouldn’t have guessed that!

The cost of producing The Falcon is subsidized by ASSP, but we also make a good deal of money most years by selling advertising both in print and online.

We’re only allowed to spend a small portion of the budget on cupcakes or hanging plants, and any profits we make get returned to the ASSP general fund. The editors are paid, and both they and the staff writers get class credit.

We have an office on campus where we produce the paper and hold meetings. It’s an old apartment that is set to be torn down once SPU finds the dough to start the construction for University Center.

The printing is done off-campus with Pacific Publishing, which is some company in Seattle. The stork delivers paper to various spots around campus.

We have a faculty advisor - a journalism professor – who gives us guidance, but ultimately doesn’t determine what goes in the paper.

All material in the paper is produced by The Falcon’s staff unless otherwise noted. There’s a wide range of expertise among our staff, from people writing their very first stories to people who have been doing it for years.

We’re a bunch of students at various stages of experience and interest in journalism, and we’ll try to keep you, the reader, in mind this year.
