Aanstad wins javelin event at nationals

Seattle Pacific senior Brittany Aanstad won the national javelin championship this past weekend, throwing the spear 168 feet, one inch.

Aanstad set a new school and Great Northwest Athletic Conference record with her attempt at the NCAA National Championships in Pueblo, Colo.

The senior Falcon duet made up of Aanstad and Ali Worthen had their last chance to shine on the national stage at the meet.

The two women flew away from the event with two medals and the approval of head coach Karl Lerum.

“I’m very proud of their performances at nationals but also proud of their work since September to get to this point. Both athletes deserve what they achieved because of their hard work,” Lerum said.

Earlier this season, Aanstad set the national high mark of the year with a throw of 161 feet, 11 inches. With that throw came the expectation of a first-place finish at nationals.

At the national meet, Aanstad shattered her personal record by seven feet.

Worthen earned the bronze medal in the heptathlon.

“Ali is a rare athlete and goes about her business in a professional matter and has set an example for our other runners during her career,” Lerum said.

The only male runner for the Falcons was senior Nate Seely. Seely competed in the men’s 800-meter race and finished 14th with a time of 1 minute, 56.99 seconds.
