Urbanite adventures: top 10 weekend events

Emerald City offers plenty to students

1. "Coffee: The World in Your Cup" exhibit at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture

According to the exhibit, Seattle and Tacoma residents consume more coffee per capita than any other city in the nation. Caffeine is also the most used drug in the world.

At the "Coffee: The World in Your Cup" exhibit, learn more about the drink millions of people around the world consume daily. The exhibit has been extended until Sept. 7 due to popular demand. The exhibit also offers coffee tastings every weekend, but the tastings end June 7. Student tickets sell for $6.

The Burke Museum is located on the corner of 17th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 45th Street.

2. Seattle Opera's "The Marriage of Figaro"

Music, costumes and drama. Visit McCaw Hall this weekend to explore Mozart's famous opera before it ends May 16. Students can purchase tickets for $25 for seats in the second tier, on the side or back. Students can also buy them for $20 two hours prior to any show with their student IDs.

3. Seattle Cheese Festival

The fifth annual Seattle Cheese Festival at Pike Place Market is this weekend. Take a break from studying and walk around to sample more than 200 varieties of cheese from around the world.

4. SPU 5K Twilight Falcon Run

If you don't have any plans for Friday night, join the SPU cross country and track teams to run for a good cause. This inaugural race will help SPU's cross country and track teams as well as Hope Runs, a nonprofit organization assisting AIDS orphans in Kenya. The run will begin at 6 p.m. in Magnuson Park. The entry fee is $15 and T-shirts will be available for $10.

5. "Katyn" at the Seattle International Film Festival Cinema

"Katyn," a Polish political drama about WWII, is opening this Friday at the SIFF Cinema at McCaw Hall. This 2007 film was nominated for an Academy Award in 2008 for Best Foreign Language Film. Directed by Andrzej Wajda, the movie is about mass graves discovered in 1943 in a forest named Katyn. Student tickets sell for $9 and $7 for the first show of the day on Saturday and Sunday.

6. University District Street Fair

May is the month of festivals in Seattle. The annual University District Street Fair begins Saturday at 10 a.m. and ends Sunday at 6 p.m. Make crafts, eat food and dress up in the fashions of your favorite decade to win prizes.

7. Seattle Mariners vs. Boston Red Sox

Support the Mariners when they play against the Boston Red Sox this weekend. Enjoy garlic fries and hot dogs as you root for your favorite team. Tickets start at $7. The first game starts at 7:10 p.m. Friday and also on Saturday and at 1:10 p.m. Sunday.

8. SPU Jazz Band at The Triple Door

The SPU Jazz Ensemble will perform a concert at The Triple Door on Sunday. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available for $15 on their Web site (http://tripledoor.net).

9. Norwegian Parade and Celebration

The annual Norwegian Parade and Celebration is one of many festivals occurring this weekend in Ballard. Commonly known as Syttende Mai, the parade celebrates the 120th Ballard celebration of the Norwegian Constitution Day. It's equivalent to the Fourth of July in the United States. Sit back and enjoy the day Norway gained independence from Sweden.

10. Seattle Art Museum exhibit "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness"

Visit the SAM to view American art from the Yale University Gallery. This exhibit features Paul Revere, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer and many more. Experience through art the early days of America before its 233rd birthday this July. Free tickets and half-price tickets are available at the ASSP office on a first come, first serve basis. Regular student tickets sell for $9.
