Sports teams’ travel affected by snowfall

Snowpocalypse 2012 brought joy to many students at Seattle Pacific, but it made the gymnastics team’s trip to San Jose, Calif. difficult.

“We didn’t know if we were going to get there. Our flight was canceled; we ended up staying the night in Sea-Tac,” head coach Laurel Tindall said.

The team was scheduled to leave Thursday for San Jose, but its flight was cancelled due to the amount of snow on the runways at Sea-Tac Airport. At that point, the team’s flight had to be rescheduled.

“Thursday, when there was no school, we were ready to leave, and we basically just stood around and waited all day to see what we were going to do,” Tindall said. “Once our flight was canceled, I said, ‘We don’t know when we’re going to get on. You guys have to be ready at a moment’s notice to be back here.’”

However, the gymnasts didn’t let the travel issues bother them, and they embraced the adventure together, making light of the continued setbacks. “Our attitude helped with how we looked at the whole situation. We just kept making jokes the whole time about how long the day went,” senior Sherah Veron said.

They eventually made it to San Jose in time for the meet, and despite the long day they just had, they were just happy to be competing.

“We handled all of the dilemmas with an incredible amount of fortitude and relied on each other to get through each of the events,” senior Texie Gregory said. “If anything, we were just so enthused to actually be in San Jose and able to compete that we were able to relax and enjoy the experience and just roll with punches as they came.”

The Montana State Billings women’s basketball team was also delayed because of the snowfall in Seattle. Although theirs was not as eventful as the gymnastics team’s story, their schedule was also affected.

“We were delayed at the Billings airport from a 6 a.m. departure to an 8:30 a.m. departure,” Billings head coach Kevin Woodin said.
