Get out your knee socks and strap on your headband and your goggles, because intramural racket sports are coming.
Spring quarter sports aren’t just about softball and soccer; there is a bevy of one-day, racket-related events in the coming months. Badminton and pickle ball are alternatives to the usual brand of intramural sports fodder.
These one-day events also give students another chance to foil 5th Hill’s triple-crown threat. If that isn’t enough motivation to participate, I don’t know what is.
And because floors will be fighting for all the intramural points they can get spring quarter, there’s bound to be some intense action on the court, making certain those headbands and goggles will be put to good use.
For those of you who have no idea what pickle ball is, here’s some enlightenment. Pickle ball was actually created in Washington on Bainbridge Island in 1965.
Pickles was the name of the family dog of one of the inventors of pickle ball. He would steal the balls when they went astray and hide them in some bushes. Thus, through the bad behavior of the family canine, pickle ball had a name.
What does the sport look like? Lower a badminton net until it’s touching the ground, replace the stringed racket with a smaller wooden paddle and replace the shuttlecock with a hard plastic ball, and you have pickle ball.
What? You don’t believe me? Check it out for yourself. Pickle ball is one of the more intense and enjoyable sports out there.
Badminton should be a little bit more familiar to the common SPU student. Who hasn’t played it in high school gym class?
Both badminton and pickle ball offer singles and doubles events, so grab a friend. These sports offer some of the largest crowds of participants this side of intramural football. Besides, what better way is there to slack off and avoid studying?
So come back from spring break refreshed and ready for some racket sports action.
