The SPU women’s basketball team continued their streak into the post-season with a victory over No.8 ranked Cal State Chico. The win will put Chico out of the running for Division II Champions.
The match began in what seemed to be a typical start for SPU as the Falcons took off to an early lead over Chico. Senior center Kelley Berglund led the assault with 15 rebounds and an unprecedented 30 points in the game. The mark is a new SPU record for points scored in a single post-season game.
Senior guard Stephanie Urrutia helped even the attack, sinking 7-8 attempts from the line and finishing with 16 points. She also managed to add a team-best 8 assists for the game.
Early in the second half, an 18-7 run brought the Wildcats within five points of the Falcons. SPU responded with 8 straight points from Berglund. With the boost from Berglund and a solid defensive effort the Falcons managed to pull away from Chico State for the rest of the game, ending with a final score of 81-70.
SPU will advance to the semifinals tonight to face off against Montana State-Billings, who defeated Central Washington 91-69 in the third game of Friday evening. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m..
Northwest Nazarene defeated Western Washington University, 83-79 and will pair off with Cal State Bakersfield, who beat Cal State Stanislaus 116-106, to complete the semifinals bracket. The winners tomorrow’s two games will face-off Monday to decide who the West Region Champions is.
