SPU freshman Kathryn Tyler was in the President’s Dining Room on Third Gwinn Thursday when Gary and Barbara Ames signed a $100,000 check that is funding ethnic minority student scholarships, one of which Tyler is a recipient.
Approximately thirty people were present at the check-signing ceremony including SPU faculty and staff, members of the community and three scholarship recipients, including Tyler.
The $100,000 check was the first installment of $1 million that the Ames’ have committed to give to SPU over the next 10 years. According to President Phil Eaton, at the Ames’ request, the money will be used to fund scholarships for ethnic minority students.
Eaton said that this is the largest gift to be used for minority scholarships ever given to SPU.
"We are investing in the academic success of these students," Eaton said.
According to Tyler, prior to being notified last summer that she had been awarded a renewable $8,000 scholarship, she was wondering how she would pay for college tuition.
"I was happy," Tyler said regarding the day she found out.
Tyler said that it was nice to meet the Ames’ on Thursday and thank them for her scholarship. However, she felt like she should have done more to thank them.
"I felt like I was saying thank you … for letting me borrow a pencil," Tyler said. "I guess just saying ‘thank you’ was enough."
The Ames’ are a retired couple residing in Seattle who, according to Eaton, told him about a year ago that they wished to give $1 million to SPU.
Gary who is the former president and CEO of USWest Communications, said that he and Barbara have "more money than we know what to do with," and decided to share some of their wealth with SPU.
According to Eaton, this gift is helping to further the vision that SPU has to increase diversity on campus.
"It’s just a great moment for us," Eaton said of receiving the Ames’ gift.
