Seattle Pacific University will host the Pacific West Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Lincoln Park in Seattle.
The race will feature more than 200 runners from 13 teams including SPU.
This race will be the the third time in seven years that SPU hs hosted the conference championships in West Seattle.
The women will look to defend their title which they have held for three years and will look to senior Heather Wallace, sophomore Rachel Ross, and freshman Nicole Seana to lead the team in doing so.
Both Wallace and Ross have been battling injuries this season. Ross was the conference champion last year, and Wallace won in 1996 and 1997. For the first time this year, the women’s team is almost at full strength.
Seana is the women’s second leading scorer on the team behind Wallace and has finished in the top 10 in five of her races this year.
The women will have to outrun Central Washington who placed second last year behind SPU and recently placed ahead of the Falcons on Oct. 16.
The women have won five titles in the last six years losing to Hawaii Hilo in 1995.
The men will look to improve on their sixth place in last year’s race in which Humboldt State won the title. Humboldt State is currently ranked 13th and will have to look out for Alaska Anchorage and Western Washington as well as SPU if they want to repeat.
The Falcons will again need strong performances from sophomore Nathanael Castle and junior Kelsey Backen to improve on last year’s performance.
Castle has been the top Falcon finisher in all but one race this year. Backen was the top finisher for the team in the other race.
The men are also looking to have a member of their team to be the first member of the men’s team to qualify for the all-conference team since 1996.
The top 10 finishers for each race will make up the all-conference teams.
The women’s 5000-meter race will start at 10 a.m. followed by the men’s 8k race at 10:45.
